A funny story told to us by a German woman who i met in Colca Canyon, waiting for the Condors to fly.

Jane (we'll call her Jane since I don't remember her real name) arrived in Lima as part of her vacation in Peru thinking her knowledge of the Spanish language is a sure plus. She will soon make some friends and experience the city to the fullest. What do you know, as it so rarely happens everything went right according to plan and already on her first day Jane met a nice Peruvian lad who volunteered to show her around. They spent the whole day together and the Peruvian showed her not only sites but also good local eateries and hostels. You'd think he wanted something in return, but no, no hint to a "local guide" fee ever came and what's more, they even met the next day and spent it together again enjoying each others company and gazing at the colonial architecture - Lima is famous for its many cathedrals. The Peruvian told Jane about the city's history and Jane snapped pictures. When they reached a church Jane particularly liked she gave her camera to her companion and asked him to take a picture. She stepped back to better position herself in the frame when her new friend raised the camera, aimed, turned around, and ran!

"I screamed: me camera, me camera! and waived my hands, but nobody as much as looked in his direction." Jane told me and some others who gathered to listen. Her story was sad, no doubt, but but what it was more is funny. Even Jane couldn't hide her smile. Obviously it sucked, loosing her camera, but you have to admit how inventive the Peruvian was. His acting skills and time investment would be nothing short of admirable if only he put it toward something less illegal.
